WARNING: This includes major spoilers for season 4.

Let it be said that at times, I can be a complete hyprocrit.
When I first watched Supernatural I completely and utterly adored Ruby (1.0) and then she was gone and Genevieve came in as Ruby 2.0.
I was 100% one of those people who violently hated her just because she wasn't Katie Cassidy.
And then she was dead and that arc was over and I ignored it.
Until I rewatched the series.
In my second watching of Supernatural I loved Ruby 2.0 so so so much more. Ruby was the first antagonist (I'm not going to say villain) that came along that truly played the line of Is she good? Is she bad?
Even when she was involved in storylines intended to drag the boys apart and make her the villain, she still remained interesting and intriguing.
Even if I wanted to shake her, I wanted to shake the boys MORE for not realizing how well she was playing them against their weaknesses and fears.
Despite all her "evil" behaviour, I do truly believe that Ruby cared for Sam. And while she wasn't playing straight with what the boys believed she was helping them do, she was doing what she thought was right.
Not to mention I really enjoyed some Sammeh/Ruby smexin'. (*COUGH* I mean really, is anyone surprised here?!)
Ruby had attitude, in all of her incarnations, from sassy black maid to what I logically refer to as Ruby 1.5 (HEY she came in between 1.0 and 2.0 but she existed in a flashback, damnit!) and was one of the only characters, female OR male, that I took to immediately.
The women of Supernatural have a bad rap, as have the fans for their opinions about them, but I think the women of Supernatural have been some of the most interesting short lived characters throughout the series so far.
They've always had to be bad ass and be interesting enough to hold their own with the obviously enthralling lives of the Winchester boys.
While Ruby wasn't the first or only "bad girl" to appear on Supernatural (Bela, anyone?) she was the longest continual demon arc that we had had, and the first one that had anything other than a relationship as enemies with our main characters.
I should probably end this rant just by going:
RUBY RUBY RUBY RUBY RUBY
♥

You know.
I think tomorrow I shall do a picspam/post dedicated to Ruby and her love of french fries.

The mini picspam is gorgeous!

Ruby 1.0 and 2.0 really have some serious differences, completely aside from the actresses and I think that does come into how people feel about her. But I really feel (and know, from my own silliness) that a lot of the hate is completely because Genevieve wasn't Katie.
That being said, I adore them both.
As actresses and as Ruby.
And we all know how much I'm in love with Genevieve so I'll stop there.
AND THANK YOU.
I really like it.
Although the caps did what I wanted more on Katie's side than on Gen's side.
But I'm still pleased.

I'm so ashamed of my "meta", but it's late and I have a slow connection and voice control.

So I'd rather just talk about why I like the character and what she offers to the show and the fandom and why she's awesome.
And I'm kind of really proud. :D

You did good. (Yes, I'm intentionally using good.)

I adore Genevieve.
I even bought Wildfire randomly because of my small
not so smallobsession with her.I've got my brother watching Supernatural and he immediately was like I don't like this version of Ruby. and I was like YOU'LL GET OVER IT AND LEARN TO LOVE HERRRRRR.

So cheap and yet so unattainable!

Completely agreed that Ruby was one of the most fascinating characters in the series, hands down. Gawd, I miss her.
And word--she did genuinely care for Sam. Absolutely. Will ship it to the death.

Ugh she was just so awesomeeeee.
And when I heard Gen was going to be in The French Mistake I was so ridiculously excited to see her and all it would mean for the OMG RUBY? lulz.
And it absolutely did not disappoint. And she was hilarious and adorable.

You have seen the light.

Thank you! Thank you! In advance!
Dang the actress was good! I always wished she could've lasted longer on the show and she was the only person that truly flummoxed Giles.
Her entrance was awesome. "Synchronised slaying, what'd you think?"
"Sloppy, you telegraphed your punches and took too long."
AWESOME lady who's awesome!

LOL, Yes! I love fallibility in characters, on both sides of the hero/villain coin. And on this show, let's face it, those sides are not that clear.
she was doing what she thought was right.
Great point. And she was so much like Sam in that sense. Good intentions....
Excellent post!

And I mean, she is a demon. Obviously her sense of what is right might not be whats best for humanity. But she isn't flip flopping around an issue.
She sticks to it and she believes in it.

And before I start rambling my thoughts on that here. I think I might do that for my day three lol.
Yeah the demon blood arc was kind of... hinky.
It didn't make the most sense and sometimes it felt like a childish peer pressure enabling vibe.
But it had its purpose as much as there were flaws in it.
